The problem is: browser does not allow for non-antialiased fonts. Also, its built-in font engine is sorta sophisticated, so rendering fonts is rather slow. For these I'm using the CP437 glyphs, stored as 8bit values, drawing them directly into canvas image data (without shaders!). Works pretty fast, I'm proud of myself...
